Marcelo Claure

Marcelo Claure is executive chairman of the board of Sprint Corporation. He also serves as chief operating officer of SoftBank Group Corp. and chief executive officer of SoftBank International, a Japanese multinational conglomerate, and is a member of the SoftBank board of directors. He also serves on the board of Arm, a leading chip technology developer. Marcelo most recently was Sprint CEO. He is chairman of Miami Beckham United, Miami’s newest major league soccer franchise, and chairman of CTIA, a national trade association representing the wireless communications industry in the United States. Sprint is one of the world’s largest telecommunications companies, providing service to 54.6 million customers in nearly 200 countries around the world. Marcelo joined the company in August 2014 and took the company through a significant transformation – growing revenue, reducing expenses by more than $6 billion while massively improving the quality of its products and services. During his four years as CEO, Sprint revitalized its brand and went from losing millions of customers to gaining more than 2.1 million. The company has achieved its best financial results in company history. The company also increased its adjusted EBITDA from $6 billion to $11 billion and reversed a trend of cash flow losses into generating $945 million in free cash flow in fiscal year 2017. And for the first time in 11 years, the company was net income positive. Sprint has committed to investing $20 billion to build the world’s first mobile 5G network. With low latency and speeds faster than fiber internet, the network will help propel the new industrial revolution composed of robotics, autonomous cars, artificial intelligence and more. Marcelo immigrated to the United States from Bolivia. In 1997, he founded Brightstar as a small, Miami-based wireless distributor and transformed it into the world’s largest global wireless distribution and services company, with revenues exceeding $10 billion and a presence in more than 50 countries. Brightstar was recognized as the largest Hispanic-owned business in U.S. history. Marcelo embodies the successful pursuit of the American Dream. Marcelo has been recognized as one of the world’s most successful entrepreneurs. He was named a Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum and is a member of Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year Hall of Fame. And Hispanic Business magazine named him Entrepreneur of the Year. Marcelo is very passionate for futbol (soccer). He owns Club Bolivar, Bolivia’s most popular and successful soccer team currently the ranked #9 in Latin America. Marcelo is chairman and majority owner of Miami Beckham United with partners David Beckham, Jorge Mas and Masayoshi Son. The team is expected to play in 2020. In 2016, he was among 42 individuals selected by the Carnegie Corporation of New York as part of the “Great Immigrants: The Pride of America” initiative recognizing notable contributions to the progress of our society. Past notable award recipients have included PayPal founder Max Levchin, chef and restaurateur Wolfgang Puck, actress Sofia Vergara and Google CEO Sundar Pichai. Giving back to those in need is one of Marcelo’s top priorities. More than a decade ago, he and Nicholas Negroponte co-founded One Laptop Per Child, an organization dedicated to providing low-cost laptops to children in impoverished communities. At Sprint, Marcelo launched the 1Million Project to help 1 million high school students across the U.S. reach their full potential. The 1Million Project is one of the largest U.S. corporate initiatives to help bridge the digital divide. Each participating student receives a device and free high-speed internet access to ensure they have the connectivity necessary to succeed in school and accomplish their goals. Marcelo earned a Bachelor of Science in Economics and Finance in 1993 and an honorary Doctorate of Commercial Science from Bentley University in Massachusetts. He is a member of the 2016 Class of Henry Crown Fellows and the Aspen Global Leadership Network at the Aspen Institute. Marcelo is married and has five children.
