The story of Katzen Real Estate traces its roots to the mid-20th century with the entrepreneurial vision of Harry Katzen, whose early ventures laid the groundwork for a four-generation real estate legacy. In the rural community of Sykesville, Pennsylvania, Harry established several pioneering businesses that served local farmers and hunters, including dead-stock handling and fur collection. During World War II, his operations played a critical role in the war effort by supplying raw materials used in the production of glycerin for military explosives. These endeavors not only built strong community trust but also provided Harry with deep insight into land values and regional real estate dynamics. Reinvesting his business profits, he acquired farms and land holdings that eventually grew into thousands of acres and dozens of properties. Following Harry’s untimely passing, his son Marc Katzen assumed leadership of the family business at just 16 years old. While managing the enterprise, Marc simultaneously served as a Jefferson County Commissioner and practiced law, demonstrating uncommon resilience and discipline. Under his leadership, the business expanded into office and warehouse development in DuBois, Pennsylvania, establishing a durable foundation for future growth. The third generation marked a period of geographic and strategic expansion. Marc’s sons, Hank and Hirsh Katzen, joined the business and helped extend operations beyond Pennsylvania. Hank rebranded the company from MarKay Farms to MarKay Management, reflecting both continuity and a broader real estate focus. After developing office buildings and restaurant franchises in Pennsylvania, Hank relocated to Florida, where he worked closely with his father to acquire and develop commercial properties, including historic office buildings, retail centers, and land near the University of Central Florida. Hank and Hirsh jointly managed these assets through redevelopment and disposition, reinforcing the firm’s disciplined investment approach. Beyond business, Hank Katzen was deeply committed to philanthropy and community leadership. A passionate advocate for the Jewish community, he played a central role in the transformation of Central Florida Hillel and the development of The Towers at Knights Plaza, a landmark student housing project that created long-term financial sustainability for Hillel while enhancing campus life. Known for his humility, generosity, and humor, Hank combined sharp instincts with an uncommon ability to connect with people. His enthusiasm for “chasing the deal” and mentoring others left a lasting impression on colleagues and partners alike. In later years, Hank and Hirsh continued to collaborate on warehouse and office acquisitions across Central Florida, underscoring the family’s enduring focus on strategic diversification. Following Hank’s passing, his youngest son, Mason Katzen, joined Hirsh in the business, carrying forward the Katzen family’s four-generation tradition of entrepreneurship, stewardship, and community engagement.
