Housed in a pre-civil war southern mansion, known as the DeRosset House, lovingly restored to it’s former glory in 1998, the City Club exudes the dream and hospitality of this gracious southern city that is Wilmington. One of the largest and most prominent among the 18th and 19th century houses situated along downtown Wilmington’s tree-lined streets, the DeRosset house was built in 1841 by Dr. Armand John DeRosset III, a physician, merchant and entrepreneur. The National Register of Historic Places calls this home “the grandest of all Wilmington’s antebellum, Italian dwellings”. Entrance to the City Club is gained by passing through the stately brick columns and walking up the terraced gardens. An expansive front porch leads to the interior, with many original architectural elements, including a dramatic staircase leading to upper-level guest suites, tiered moldings and 12 foot ceilings. The Club features multiple dining rooms, two bars and six guest suites, along with lounges, meeting rooms and period gardens. members enjoy both fine and casual dining, for lunch and dinner, as well as private event services and weddings, all with attention to excellent service. City Club is one of the few venues in Downtown Wilmington with the ability to host larger events, provide food and beverage services and accommodations! St. Thomas Preservation Hall located at 208 Dock St., adjacent to the DeRosset House, was constructed in 1846 by Robert B. Wood, St Thomas the Apostle served a small but growing parish of Catholics in New Hanover County. The church’s construction and parish were overseen by Father Thomas Murphy. The church later became the pro-Cathedral of North Carolina when Fr. James Gibbons was consecrated as the Vicar-Apostolic. In 1908, the parish bought land at South Fifth Street and Ann, where the Basilica Shrine of St Mary would later be completed in 1912, which allowed the growing parish more space. Since closing the doors as a church this wonderful property has remained a vital part of the Wilmington community hosting hundreds of weddings and special events. The exposed brick walls, beautiful stained- glass windows, high ceilings and balcony loft make St. Thomas a perfect backdrop to all events. Accommodating ceremonies and receptions for up to 200 seated guests. The venue rental rate includes tables and chairs for all 200 and use of the facility for 18 hours so clients can set up and decorate all day at no extra charge.
