El Camino East was built under the USDA Rural housing program to provide affordable housing to seniors. The 8 one bedroom and 4 two bedroom units were built in 1968. El Camino West was also built under the USDA housing program but expanded to provide housing assistance on a income need basis. The 22 two bedroom units were built in 1981. The USDA continues to pay a portion of the rent for those tenants that were previously qualified. Any applicant with a USDA voucher from another location could transfer that to El Camino Apartments. No new USDA vouchers can be applied for at El Camino as it is now under private ownership. Chireno is 140 miles north of Houston and 175 miles south east of Dallas. Nacogdoches is home to businesses of all size, but more than 30 have 100 or more employees. Two of the largest have more than 1,500 employees each. Major employers in Nacogdoches include Stephen F. Austin State University, Walmart, Nacogdoches Medical Center, Lowes, Etech Global Services, and NacSpace. Stephen F. Austin State University has more than 13,000 students. More than 42% of households in Nacogdoches county are renters. Major employers in Lufkin include Pilgrim’s Pride, Brookshire Brothers, St. Luke’s Hospital, Angelina College, Lockheed Martin, Georgia Pacific, and others. Both East and West have their own septic systems. The East side septic system was replaced in 2023. El Camino West is located adjacent to the City of Chireno park. Tenants and children are able to access and enjoy the playground and facilities through a gate on the apartment side of the park. All units have a grass area in front of the apartment that is enjoyed by residents. The landscaping is taken care of by El Camino Apartments. An overabundance of parking places allow residents to have multiple vehicles with no issues to find space. Tenants supply their own refrigerator, and on the East Side also supply a window unit air conditioner.
