Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) is in the midst of a massive, multi-billion dollar capital improvement program known as ATLNext. The developments are focused on modernizing the airport, expanding its capacity, and improving the passenger experience.
Here are some of the key developments and projects underway:
Terminal and Concourse Expansion
Concourse D Widening: One of the most significant and complex projects is the $1.4 billion expansion of Concourse D. Known as the airport's narrowest concourse, the project will expand its width by 75% and lengthen it by 288 feet. This is being done using a unique modular construction method to keep the concourse operational during renovations. The project is slated for completion in the summer of 2029.
Domestic Terminal Modernization: This includes significant upgrades to the domestic terminal, such as a new security screening checkpoint expansion, restroom renovations, and the addition of five new gates to Concourse T. A notable feature is the new $70 million canopy over the domestic terminal's curbside, which provides weather protection and features a programmable LED lighting display.
Infrastructure and Transportation
Plane Train Upgrade: A major overhaul of the airport's people mover system is underway. A new fleet of 63 energy-efficient train cars is being rolled out as part of a $300 million investment. The new trains, along with a recently completed tunnel extension, will increase the system's capacity and reduce wait times between concourses. The full implementation is expected by early 2026.
Parking Decks: To address the growing number of travelers, a new seven-level, $530 million parking deck is under construction at the South Terminal. Scheduled to open in 2026, it will provide an additional 6,700 parking spaces. This is part of a larger plan to rebuild and modernize the existing North and South domestic terminal parking structures.
Airfield Improvements: The ATLNext program includes several airfield projects aimed at improving operational efficiency and safety. This involves taxiway realignments, pavement replacement, and the potential for a new sixth runway.
Technology and Sustainability
Technological Advancements: The airport is integrating advanced technology to streamline operations. This includes the implementation of biometric screening, AI-powered customer service, and modernized baggage handling systems.
Sustainability Initiatives: Hartsfield-Jackson is committed to sustainability with a goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. This involves using solar power, energy-efficient lighting, and other green practices. New construction projects are being designed to achieve LEED certification.
