Proximity to Watts Bar Nuclear plant and multiple substations: located in east TN on the Chickamauga reservoir. The plant’s two pressurized water reactors generate a combined 2,300 megawatts of electricity (enough for over 1.3 M homes daily). Watts Bar’s reactors are licensed to operate through 2035 and 2055 ensuring the plant will continue to deliver safe, reliable power. Located 0.39 mi from the corner of this site to the Tennessee River, the land between is controlled by the TVA.
Watts Bar Nuclear Plant Overview:
The Watts Bar Nuclear Plant, operated by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), consists of a pair of nuclear reactors that generate electricity. This facility is situated on a 1,770-acre site in Rhea County, Tennessee, close to Spring City and located between Chattanooga and Knoxville. The construction of the plant began in 1973, featuring two units of Westinghouse pressurized water reactors: Unit 1, which was finished in 1996, and Unit 2, which was completed in 2015. Unit 1 produces a dependable winter net output of 1,167 megawatts, while Unit 2 generates 1,165 megawatts. Notably, Unit 2 was the first of three new reactors in the United States to become operational in the 21st century. Nuclear energy is one of the most resilient, environmentally sustainable, and reliable energy sources on the grid today.
