222 SOUTH MAIN has been an essential part of downtown Akron’s story for more than 85 years. Built in 1928 by Chicago firm Graham, Anderson, Probst, and White, the building was the home of the legendary O’Neil’s department store. For the next 60 years, it became a bustling hub of activity in downtown Akron, bringing visitors from all over Northeast Ohio to shop and explore. O’Neil’s closed its doors in 1988, but the building and its story live on.
