Located in the heart of the Downtown Akron, the Carlton Building is the perfect blend of one of the city’s most historic buildings, while also being newly-renovated, and home to some of its most modern, high quality spaces.
Built in 1900, the building is oldest in the central part of Downtown Akron, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It has a storied tradition of being home to some of the city’s most successful and prestigious retail establishments over the years, including Carlton’s Clothes, which occupied the space for nearly 50 years, still serving as the building’s namesake. Most recently the first floor space was home to a high-end retail store, specializing in apparel, footwear, and lifestyle goods, with a focus on designer collections.
The building has been recently renovated from top to bottom, receiving a brand new facade in 2008, and a full interior renovation from 2019-2022, in which every aspect of the building was built out from scratch as new, showcase spaces. The first floor was designed to be Downtown Akron’s premier retail location, and the upper two floors currently serve as one of downtown’s most-unique creative office spaces. The building’s high quality renovation led to it receiving a Historic Restoration and Rehabilitation Award from The Summit County Historical Society and Progress Through Preservation of Greater Akron.
