The Haynie Building is one of the most beautiful buildings in Llano, Texas.
Description and History of the Haynie Building
The Haynie Building was designed by a prominent Austin architect A.O. Watson for one of Llano's matriarchs, Elizabeth Haynie, locally known as, "Aunt Betty", in 1882. The building is 12,000 square feet and is made of brick. At the time of construction Native Americans roamed the Llano countryside. An 1894 issue of the Llano News, reported Elizabeth Haynie was shot at by Indians while she stood in the doorway of her building on the northwest corner of Ford Street & W. Main Street.
The Haynie Building is amongst the first multi-level (two-story) brick structures in Llano County. The first telephone switchboard in Llano was located in the Haynie Building in the 1880's. The building has a series of storefronts on Ford Street and has housed many professionals and merchants as well as a bank for thirty years. During the 1940's the Llano County Hospital occupied the entire second floor.
The Haynie Building is prominently located on the northwest corner of W. Main & Ford Street, one of the most visible buildings on the Historic Llano Courthouse Square. If you are traveling north on Ford Street it is impossible to miss. The Haynie Building's prominent location has been a popular gathering place since its construction 143 years ago.
