Payson, also known as "The Heart of Arizona" is a town in northern Gila County, Arizona. Ninetyseven percent of the land around Payson is under the jurisdiction of the United States Forest Service. Its location puts it very near to the geographic center of Arizona- 90 minutes North of Phoenix, 90 minutes south of Sedona, and 90 minutes west of Showlow, attracting visitors from around the state to hike Payson's hundreds of trails, golf its renowned courses, and camp in Payson's year-around climate.

With its elevation of almost 5000 feet, Payson enjoys tolerable summers with average temperatures reaching the high 80s to mid 90s- lower than the 100+ temperatures found at Arizona's lower elevations. Winter is mild, with cold nights. January' s average nighttime low is 25° with some nights in the teens, but
by mid-afternoon, the temperature has usually risen into the 50s. There are only a few days of real winter, with 23.3 inches (0.59 m) of annual snowfall, but very little snow cover. The weather in Payson is as varied as the landscape.
