The Monadnock was the largest commercial office building in the world at the time of its completion in 1893. It comprises two joined buildings designed by different architects. The north half, completed in 1891, was designed by John Wellborn Root of Burnham and Root. It was the tallest building in the world that is supported primarily by brick load bearing walls; at the ground floor these walls are six feet thick. The south half was designed by Holabird and Roche and completed in 1893. The architecture is classical, but it matches the north half in color and scale.The Monadnock Building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and was given the National Honor Award by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1987 for the quality of the restoration done by the Montauk Company.
