The Inland Steel Building at 30 West Monroe, is located in the heart of the Central Loop, immediately east of Bank One Plaza. Recently purchased by a joint venture partnership which includes renowned architect Frank Gehry, the building is undergoing a renaissance to bring it back to its full glory.
30 West Monroe has a unique and significant place in Chicago’s architectural history. This Historically Landmarked Building delivered many “Firsts” to the Chicago office marketplace, including these accomplishments: 30 West Monroe was the first skyscraper in the world to be built with external supports and a steel and glass curtain wall. It was the first skyscraper with column free space. It was the first downtown office building designed by world class architectural firm Skidmore Owings and Merrill. It was the first major building to be built on steel pilings instead of concrete. It was the first downtown high rise with significant underground parking.
