The Board of Trade is one of Chicago's best Art Deco skyscrapers, in large part because its massing reinforces the perspective view down LaSalle Street and provides a forceful termination to the LaSalle Street financial district.
The present structure rests on a nine-story base, which contained the enormous six-story trading room of the Board (until it was divided horizontally in 1975 to provide additional space). Above the base a wide tower rises at the rear of the structure to reach 45 stories. Two symmetrical projections to the north rise 13 stories above the base and create a deep setback. Atop the roof is a 32-foot aluminum statue of Ceres, the Roman goddess of grain. Designed by sculptor John H. Storrs, it symbolizes one of the chief commodities traded by the Board.
