Marina proposed for mega yachts
PIER 17 is located along the south side of the SW 17th Street at the Southerly terminus of SW 18th Avenue in Fort Lauderdale, Broward County, Florida. The property is specifically situated along the north side of the south fork of New River directly across from Lauderdale Marine Center the largest boatyard in the Southeastern United States.
The site is irregular in shape and contains a total of approximately 242,028 square feet, or approximately 5.556 acres according to the site plan provided. Approximately 109,975 or 45 percent of the total land area represents uplands and the balance 132,053 square feet or 55 percent is submerged bottomland. The majority of the submerged land is made of an 840 foot long and 120 foot wide basin that was used as covered in water dockage.
The number of boats permitted at PIER 17 has been increased in 2011 to its original allotment of 105 boats, from 26 boats.
The PIER 17 site comprised of 5.556 acres is located at the start of the "Marina Mile" where the New River bends to the west, just east of the 1-95 Bridge, and directly across the River from LAUDERDALE MARINE CENTER ("LMC"), one of the largest Yacht Service facilities (50 acres) in the US.
PIER 17 is located before reaching the 1-95 Bridge, and not affected by the vertical clearance of 55 feet. It has direct no fixed bridge access to the Atlantic Ocean at Port Everglades, which is approximately 2 miles directly east of the site, and approximately 4 miles down the New River.
From PIER 17, it takes 20 minutes, by boat, to Downtown Fort Lauderdale, and another 20 minutes to Port Everglades and the Atlantic. Because it is more than 2 miles west of the Inter-coastal Waterway, it is considered a preferred harbor during hurricane season.
Yachts up to 165' (50 meters) can transit the River, and the future development plans for PIER 17 include slips for yachts up to 155 feet (47 meters).
